If human scholarship survives into the mid twenty first century, the more attentive historians will look at the calamitous ‘Neoliberal era,’ dating from the early 1970’s through the 2020’s, as being an experiment tested on a global scale, that had demonstrably and repeatedly proven over five decades to be a complete and utter failure.
Citing the fundamentally flawed ideology of ‘free market’ predatory capitalism, and its grandiose claims to be the best mechanism to address the world’s problems, its actual applications in variant cultural forms, in real world situations across the planet, demonstrated across a broad range of indices, quite the opposite with its pervasive lack of regard for the future of the planet and most of its people. Characterized by the myopic hubris of its chief architects and proponents, the quintessential nature of the beast was its preeminent sociopathic mindset which, if left to its own devices, would have killed the habitable planet.
The question which puzzles the future historians is how and why did past generations allow predator capitalism to evolve to crisis point, from a generally repressive phenomenon to an outright existential danger of the first degree? Why was it not nipped in the bud? It seems our scholars, from the safe distance of an insulated future, are largely unaware of the manipulative power of the entrenched establishment. And especially so, regarding the power of corporate owned mainstream media with its daily ‘shock and awe’ bombardment of dominant narratives that both ignore or rubbish the science, at the same time as perpetrating tropes operating under the guise of ‘common sense’ to protect the machinations of ‘the free market’ from any serious analysis or question. Capitalism is killing our planet, literally, but all those presenters and pundits and talking heads on cable TV would be very quickly out of a job if they seriously questioned its continued existence as the predominant driving force in our society. In the parlance of the apologists for power, that this driving force is driving us to extinction is simply not ‘newsworthy.’
For those of us living in the end-days of the neoliberal era, here and now, during the first Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, this future intellectual quandary is actually a life and death situation, because the outcome of a habitable future is not guaranteed, and at the time ow writing does not even look moderately likely. However, the total idiocy of the idea that ‘the free market will save us’ is suddenly writ large in the real time of the cracks and fissures exposed on a daily basis, of a system buckling under the colonial colossus of its own imperial weight.
We now have little choice but to confront the diminishing returns of the much-overlooked entrapment that our capitalist overlords have for decades foisted upon us. And as we reflect, from our digitally connected self-isolation, we become increasingly conscious of knowing that we have to evolve in the short span of this decade, whatever it takes to take out these suicide hijackers, who would otherwise pilot our planet to oblivion.
