Woebegone travelled light. He’d only been a week in the other, his mother, country, but it would have been the same had he been away a month, or three. He travelled light and played hard. He had to, or the emotional baggage would have crushed him like the tin can of rental car would have done had it rolled another eighteen inches into the glacially deposited granite boulder.
For no reason other than it was theoretically possible, he thought that the plane would crash as it came into land. It didn’t. And then customs was unusually a breeze. Bizarre. The bull faced x-ray operator gave him a strange look but they never even checked the metal in his leg.

PAUSE II
Monday December 1st 2025
LANGLEY, VA

“What’s he doing now?” barked Wade.
Ross, zoomed in on the image. On the larger of the two screens in front of the specialist, was the pixelgrain, picture of a man in his late thirties. He carried a guitar and had a small pack on his back. There was the hubbub of airport all around him. Nothing unusual there, but you could hear Woebegone humming a tune, and when he stopped humming you could hear his breathing. Wade reached over and hit pause.
“I don’t geddit” protested Ross, turning his attention to the other screen. “Not unless they give us something more to go on.”
In this frame Woebegone was frozen waist up. The same, but unsheathed vintage guitar was slung across his belly, blurred in the swish and sway of his hips. Since the crash the shimmy had been a little awkward. Clean shaven, dark eyebrows, open-mouthed, rolling sweat transfixed upon glimmering cheekbone.
At the click of the mouse Woebegone resumed full primal flow.
