Halloween – Friday October 31st 2025
BLACK DIAMOND, WA

It was Friday night AND it was Halloween, and of course there was gig and costume party at the Grackle Tavern. Everyone and their dog was dressed up. With his trademark black suit and somber skeletal features Woebegone fit right in.
A girl band from over the mountains had opened up. Opened up a whole new world. The Dampurrelles, swerving and twerving and revving it up. Like Damengeist sirens with Gorgonkraken hair, catgrrl cries, and vampire demon stares reeling him in with music and song.
And as Woebegone watched, he felt himself being transported. He was still present watching the band, but he was also on a sea-shore walking towards the woman with brown eyes …
Then back in the pub, as if no time at all had passed, he was side-stage, guitar in hand and the MC was introducing him.
And for moment upon crashing moment Johnny Woebegone was alive and comfortable in his own self. Atoms moved and unrehearsed duets were sung. Soul windows stayed open for more than the peragratory glance and heart muscles ever so slightly relaxed. Drinks were drunk after the show and everyone there seemed part of the universal, but imaginary swirl around the pole star.
A great band can do that. The girls, naturally in their thirties, were still a ways off their lithesome prime, but in very fine shape musically and otherwise. It was just one of those nights. All good, clean, flirtatious, fun.
The miracle of live music in a crowded and all participating room still hung in the air, even as people began layering up and making their way into the night. The molecules still resonated as the place emptied its last dregs. Woebegone remained at the bar.
Martine the bass player, who had for the previous hour remained aloof but not unaware of his occasional glances, ambled over and perched next to him. As she rested her left hand on top of his right fingers Woebegone saw the feint impression of where a wedding band had until very recently been on her ring finger. And then the vortex swirls of heavy black eyeliner and mascara tentacled lashes drew him into her messed up gray green eyes.
“I was up your way last winter,” he said.
“You wish you were up my way,” she smirked.
“I ended up in a ravine.”
“I bet you did.”
“No, really, I’ve got the scars …” he half-protested.
She moved her hand. Show me at the motel,” she said. And with a flash of her eyes, she moved to join her band-mates on their way out.

That would be The Mystery Motel. Don’t look for it. You won’t find it, but it might find you. It found Woebegone. Like a guardian angel was watching over him, but then the angel got bogged down with some other angel shit and arrived too late. He never made it to the motel, or he did, but only after the fact. Martine and the girls were long gone, but it was a good place to recuperate. After that night though, things were never the same again.

lyrics

LOST LOST WEEKEND

AFTER MIDNIGHT, MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS
THE SHOW’S OVER, THE PEOPLE ALL GONE, I’M LOADING UP THE CAR
LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOMENT, WHEN MY HEAD HITS THE PILLOW
BUT SOMETHING HARD, HITS MY HEAD INSTEAD

FIRST THE SHOCK, THEN THE PAIN KICKS IN
THE RIVERS AROUND MY EYEBALLS RUNNING RED
LIKE I CAN LOOK DOWN FROM ABOVE, AND SEE ME LYING THERE IN THE SNOW
THE OIL THE GRAVEL AND THE BLOOD

OUT ON THE LOST HIGHWAY, WHERE THE LOST RIVER FROZE
I LOST A LOST WEEKEND THERE, IN THE COLD, COLD, COLD

SO, WHY THE WHISKEY ENCRUSTED IN YOUR LAPEL?
WHEN MEDICALLY SPEAKING, YOU COULDN’T TOUCH A DROP, TO SAVE MY OWN SOUL
WHY DOES MY HEAD HURT, WHERE THE SWELLING’S SUPPOSED TO BE?
WHY WOULD ANYONE GO TO SUCH LENGTHS TO GET AT ME?

SMALL TOWN DOCTOR, SAYS YOUR CLEAN AS A WHISTLE
NOTHING … A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP, COULDN’T CURE
SO WHAT’S WITH THE BURNING BEHIND MY LEFT EYE?
WHY DOES THE SNOW REMIND ME OF BEING HOSPITALIZED?

OUT ON THE LOST HIGHWAY, WHERE THE LOST RIVER FROZE
I LOST A LOST WEEKEND THERE, IN THE COLD, COLD, COLD

THE CAR’S UNTOUCHED, THE GUITAR, THE MONEY, ALL ACCOUNTED FOR
BUT WHO’S THAT GIRL, BEING HUSTLED BY THE BONE MAN OUT THE DOOR?
WHILST I WAS UNDER, EVOLVING ADAPTIVE BEHAVIORS
THERE GOES THAT GIRL AGAIN, SKIPPING OFF ACROSS THE RIVER … THAT FROZEN RIVER

I KNOW PEOPLE DO ALL KINDS OF BAD SHIT
BUT I NEVER BOUGHT IN, TO THAT WHOLE CONSPIRACY BIT
THINGS ARE BAD ENOUGH WITHOUT MAKING MOUNTAINS OUT OF MORBID STORIES
SO WHY, OH WHY CAN’T I LET IT LIE?
WHY, OH WHY CAN’T WE LET IT LIE?
